Hand-Carved Wooden Folk Art – Tom Smith, famous frontier lawman, marshal of Abilene, KS, rode out to serve an arrest warrant on a farmer named Andrew McConnell, when he was told he was under arrest, a fight broke out and he was shot right through his lung, despite being mortally wounded, he continued to grapple, seeing his friend losing, an accomplice struck him in the head with the butt of a firearm then grabbed an axe and chopped at his neck, nearly severing his head entirely, he was succeeded as marshal by none other than Wild Bill Hickok, artist carved “VIT” in bottom, initials of a talented regional woodcarver that has deep roots in waterfowl decoy carving, the texture work on the clothing and boots strongly mimics the “feather texturing” techniques used by wildlife carvers to give wooden birds a realistic look before paint is applied, figurines have been in storage for 40 years, were going to be put on display at Donley’s Wild West Town, minor scuffs, good condition, 12″ x 6 1/2″
