Relics of the American West: 1850-1920 - ONLINE ONLY
Lot 2487:
Description
These vibrant rawhide envelopes, or “parfleche” style pouches, are classic examples of Great Plains decorative tradition, likely dating to the mid-20th century. Crafted from stiff, processed rawhide, each piece features hand-painted geometric motifs including the iconic “X” and nested triangles in bold blue, yellow, red, and green pigments. The construction utilizes hand-punched perimeter lacing with buckskin or rawhide thongs, common in ceremonial or utility items from the American West. Both pieces exhibit an authentic aged patina, with moderate surface soiling, pigment fading, and darkening of the hide. There is visible stiffness and minor fraying to the lacing, consistent with organic materials of this vintage. H 5.5″, W 5″, D 0.5″ H 5″, W 4″, D 0.5″ please see photos.
