Description
This antique historic mid-19th-century Allen & Thurber .36 Caliber single-shot percussion pistol features a center hammer design and a 6-inch part-octagon, part-round barrel. Manufactured in Worcester, Massachusetts, during the partnership of Ethan Allen and Charles Thurber between the 1840s and the Civil War, these firearms were affectionately nicknamed “boot pistols” or “muff pistols.” The top flat of the barrel features an integrated sight line and is clearly stamped with the manufacturer’s name, the text “CAST STEEL”, and the serial/batch number “572”. The piece is completed by its classic “bag-shaped” walnut grips secured with an iron screw. Objectively assessing its physical condition from the photos, the iron surfaces exhibit a uniform dark, natural patina with localized handling wear and minor, expected superficial pitting across the frame and barrel. The walnut grips are physically solid, showing a warm, aged color and minor surface scratches with no structural cracks; the mechanical firing action has not been tested. Included in this lot is the pictured single-shot pistol and the informational paper tag. H 4.75″, W 9.75″, D 1.25″ Please see photos for condition.
