Lot 2455:
Description
A definitive piece of mid-19th-century Americana, this single-shot center hammer percussion pistol showcases the innovative bar-hammer design popularized by Ethan Allen. Produced by Allen & Thurber in Worcester, Massachusetts, between 1842 and 1854, this .32 caliber pocket pistol features a distinctive octagonal-to-round iron barrel and smooth walnut grips. The top flat of the barrel section is stamped with a crisp “ALLEN & THURBER” maker’s mark while the side of the octagonal chamber is clearly stamped with the matching batch or serial number “803”. In very good antique condition, the metal surfaces exhibit a smooth, uniform gray-brown patina with minor surface oxidation and light pinprick pitting, while the wood grips show a tight fit with expected minor handling marks and light scratches from its long history. H 4.75″, W 7.25″, D 1.25″. Please see photos for condition.
