Description

This is a classic mid-19th-century American percussion firearm: an Allen & Thurber single-shot bar hammer pocket pistol, chambered in .36 caliber. Produced circa 1854 to 1856 in Worcester, Massachusetts, these handy pocket pistols frequently saw service as privately purchased secondary defensive weapons during the American Civil War. The piece features a 3-inch part-octagonal, part-round iron barrel stamped with the “ALLEN & THURBER & CO” maker mark on the left flat, a scroll-engraved iron frame, a brass trigger guard, and polished walnut grips. The matching assembly number “704” is clearly stamped on the underside of the barrel and frame components. Objectively, the pistol is in good antique condition, showing a smooth, dark brown patina on the iron surfaces with minor pitting, typical age wear on the brass trigger guard, and light handling marks on the intact wood grips. H 3.5″, W 1.25″, D 1.25″. Please see photos for condition.
