Lot 2453:
Description
This is a classic mid-19th-century Allen & Thurber single-shot percussion pocket pistol, chambered in .30 caliber. These compact “vest pocket” weapons featured a distinctive top-mounted bar hammer design and were frequently carried as secondary self-defense pieces during the American Civil War era. The frame displays an elegant scroll engraving, and the top of the bar hammer is clearly stamped “ALLEN’S PATENT”, with the serial or batch number “X678″ stamped on the octagonal section of the 2-inch barrel. Manufactured in Worcester, Massachusetts, the piece features a rich, dark patina across its iron construction and retains its original smooth walnut grips. Objectively, the pistol shows honest wear consistent with its age, including minor pitting and surface oxidization across the metal components, faint fading to the scroll engraving, and light handling marks on the wooden grips, though the action remains structurally sound. H 3.5″, W 6″, D 1”. Please see photos for condition.
