Description

An exceptionally rare and highly collectible 19th-century Allen & Thurber single-shot underhammer percussion pocket rifle/pistol chambered in .36 caliber. Manufactured in Worcester, Massachusetts, during the company’s residency there circa 1830 to 1840, this second model firearm features a half-octagonal, half-round iron barrel stamped with a crisp “WORCESTER” marking along the flats, while the “ALLEN & THURBER” stamp has worn down over time to reveal only the “and THURBER” portion on the top of the receiver. It is paired with a distinctive underhammer trigger mechanism designed for an unobstructed sight line and a smooth, walnut bag-shaped grip secured by a central screw. Objectively assessing its condition, the metalwork exhibits a naturally aged, deep plum-brown patina with light, scattered surface pitting, historical stamping wear, and minor handling marks consistent with its era, while the wooden grips retain a strong original finish with only minimal scuffs and excellent fitment to the frame. H 3.25″, W 1″, D 8″. Please see photos for condition.
