Description
Here is a beautiful Remington New Model Army (1858) revolver used by Union Officers and Cavalry soldiers during the American Civil War. Chambered in .44 caliber, this percussion revolver, manufactured by E. Remington & Sons in Ilion, New York bears the stampings “PATENTED SEPT. 14, 1858 / E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, NEW YORK, U.S.A. / NEW MODEL” on the top of the barrel. This iconic six-shot military sidearm features a clear sub-inspector stamping “S” on the 8-inch octagonal barrel, a “W” on the frame just below the cylinder hammer cutout, and several other inspection stampings through the revolver. The underside of the barrel and grip frame display the serial number “74455”, dating its production around 1864. Crafted with a solid steel frame, walnut grips, and a brass trigger guard, this robust revolver was heavily favored by Union cavalrymen for its strength and quick-reload capabilities compared to its Colt contemporaries. The firearm is in good, original antique condition, showcasing a natural, aged gray-brown patina across its iron components, with typical light handling wear, minor scattered pitting around the cylinder and percussion nipples, and some smoothing to the walnut grips. Mechanically, the action and trigger are tight and appear to function properly. The bore does show oxidation; however, the rifling is still prominent. Please see photos for overall condition.
