Description
These exceptional Great Plains moccasins, likely Lakota (Sioux) or Cheyenne from the 1890–1910 period, feature masterful “lazy stitch” beadwork on brain-tanned deer hide. The central “feather” or “life-line” column in dark red is flanked by vibrant transition green and cobalt blue geometric accents, all set against a stark white seed-beaded field. A hallmark of this era is the yellow-ochre pigment applied to the notched “split-tongue” and ankle cuffs, a stylistic choice common among Northern Plains tribes. The hard-sole construction utilizes thick rawhide, stitched with sinew, designed for the rugged terrain of the prairie. The beadwork remains remarkably tight, with only minor loss at the heel stress points and typical oxidation to the leather ties. The soles show authentic wear and darkening from historical use, while the interior hides remain supple with light staining consistent with age and periodic wear. H 3″, W 3.5″, D 10″.
