Lot 2446:
Description
These are a striking pair of Native American Plains-style moccasins, likely Lakota (Sioux) or Cheyenne, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. Constructed from brain-tanned hide, they feature extensive “lazy stitch” beadwork in a vibrant palette of emerald green, greasy yellow, cobalt blue, and white-heart red seed beads. The geometric stepped-triangle and bar motifs are classic indicators of Great Plains artistry, intended to represent topographical or spiritual elements. The addition of red trade cloth binding at the ankles and the bifurcated tongues suggest these were high-status items. The rawhide outsoles show significant evidence of historical use and age-related darkening. Condition is good for their age, showing some stiffening of the leather, minor bead loss near the heel seams, and fraying to the red fabric trim. H 3.5″, W 4″, D 10.5″. Please see photos.
