Description

This is a charming 19th-century mezzotint titled “Washington Family,” a classic piece of American iconography. Engraved by A.B. Walter after a painting by Schell and published by John Dainty at 15 S. 6th St. Philadelphia, this print captures George and Martha Washington with their grandchildren in a dignified domestic setting. The piece is housed in a period-appropriate Victorian-era oval wood frame with ornate gesso floral reliefs and a gilded inner liner. The reverse shows authentic period construction with a multi-panel wood backing and hand-wrought nails. The print shows expected age-toning and foxing; the frame has a notable 2-inch loss of gesso at the 2 o’clock position, along with various chips, cracks, and surface wear consistent with age. H 14.25″, W 12.25″, D 1.5″. Please see photos for condition.
