Relics of the American West: 1850-1920
Lot 2125:
Description
This mid-19th-century Americana piece features a classic engraving of the “Lincoln Family,” a sentimental Victorian-era grouping including Abraham, Mary Todd, Robert, and Tad Lincoln, with a portrait of the late Willie on the wall. Published by John Dainty of Philadelphia and engraved by A.B. Walter, this work was based on a painting by Schell. It is housed in its original ebonized oval frame with ornate floral gesso accents and a beaded gilt liner, retaining the original New York retailer’s stamp from E.T. Kellogg & Co. on the reverse. The item displays an aged patina; the frame has notable cracking in the gesso, surface scuffs, and some loss to the raised ornaments, while the print exhibits expected light toning and foxing typical of its age. H 14.25″, W 12.5″, D 1.5″. Please see photos for condition.
