Description
This striking Plains Indian blanket strip, originating from the Sioux (Lakota) tribe and dating to the late 19th century, showcases exceptional traditional Native American craftsmanship. Hand-sewn onto a thick, robust animal hide backing, the strip utilizes the classic lane stitch (lazy stitch) technique with historic glass seed beads. The iconic design features large, prominent circular medallions containing stylized four-direction cross or star motifs executed in vibrant white, dark blue, and rusty red beads, separated by solid panels of white beadwork and bold accent bars. The reverse side reveals the authentic, tight sinew or heavy thread stitching structurally anchoring the lanes to the leather substrate. Objectively, the piece displays heavy, age-appropriate wear throughout, including notable areas of bead loss, loose or frayed threads, a missing terminal edge, and significant natural darkening, stiffening, and staining to the hide. H 4″, W 66″, D 0.25″. Please see photos for condition.
