Lot 1039:
Description
This late-19th-century brown wax cylinder features the celebrated Irish-American tenor George J. Gaskin performing “My Beautiful Irish Maid,” cataloged as Columbia number 4036 from circa 1898. Cast from a delicate metallic soap wax compound prior to the era of mass-molded hard records, this cylinder represents the true infancy of the commercial music industry and includes its highly fragile, fragmented original paper title slip. The cylinder remains in stable condition with no breaks or cracks, exhibiting only light, expected surface wear and minor edge degradation consistent with organic wax of this age, with the grooves remaining well-defined. H 4.25″, W 2.25″, D 2.25″. Please see photos for condition. From the Allen Koenigsberg collection.
