Lot 1033:
Description
An original late-19th-century Edison brown wax cylinder record featuring the iconic Spanish-American War-era sentimental ballad, “Break the News to Mother,” performed by pioneer recording artist Jere Mahoney. Originally released by the National Phonograph Co. in 1898, this historical recording is a poignant artifact of early acoustic-era discography The brown wax cylinder remains structurally stable with the exterior surface exhibiting visible handling marks, faint scratches, and a heavy concentration of natural “bloom” (mold/fungus growth) localized to one side of the cylinder. Includes two historical reference notes: a vintage typed slip identifying the title/artist and a modern descriptive cataloging note detailing the 1898 release context. As an early brown wax release, this cylinder represents a crucial transitional period in early recorded sound. Due to the visible surface bloom, it is being offered as-is for historical preservation, restoration, or specialized cleaning by an advanced collector. Please see photos for condition. From the Allen Koenigsberg collection.
