Phonograph Records And Books Auction - ONLINE ONLY
Lot 1002:
Description
Brown wax phonograph wax cylinder record housed in protective cardboard storage tube with a faux-wood grain cap. Popularized by companies like Edison and Columbia at the turn of the 20th century, these brown wax cylinders represent the dawn of the commercial recording industry. An accompanying handwritten note indicates the recording contains a “faint piano” and a “foreign announcement,” adding an air of historical mystery for early phonograph collectors. Objectively, the wax cylinder exhibits significant surface mold, spotting, and blooming typical of organic wax composition over time, which will impact playback quality. The cardboard container shows light scuffing, minor scratches, and age-related shelf wear, but it remains structurally intact with no major cracks. H 4.75″, W 2.75″. Please see photos for condition. From the Allen Koenigsberg collection.
