Description
This serene early 20th-century landscape, signed in the lower left, captures an idyllic countryside scene featuring blooming fruit trees, grazing livestock, and a winding river. The atmospheric depth and soft, blended transitions—highly characteristic of pastel or a finely textured oil on board—align with the Tonalist movement, which prioritized mood and color harmony over sharp realism. While often misidentified as “Johnson” or “Johnsen” due to the artist’s specific script, the work is a definitive example of the listed regionalist Louis Johns. In his signature, the “s” often has a long, fluid tail that can be mistaken for an “n” or the beginning of “son” if the paint has faded or if the viewer is looking for a more common surname like Johnson. The painting is housed in its original gilt-finished wood frame with ornate scrolling along the edges, offering a quintessential “parlor art” presentation.
