Lot 3436:
Description
This is a fascinating 1929 first-day airmail cover celebrating Thomas Edison’s Golden Jubilee of Light, featuring a highly desirable combination of philatelic and historical elements. The front of the envelope shows a distinct “VIA AIR MAIL” red and blue stripe design addressed to Springfield, Illinois, postmarked October 21, 1929—the exact official date of the Edison stamp release. It is franked with three 2-cent carmine Thomas Edison electric light bulb smps and adorned with two striking gold-foil embossed seals commemorating Edison and “Better Vision.” The reverse side features a marvelous blue cachet depicting Charles Lindbergh’s Spirit of St. Louis alongside American and French flags, printed on a patented “Tear Here to Open” perforated security envelope. The piece shows minor toning, light corner wear, and typical age discoloration consistent with an un-mailed or carefully preserved philatelic souvenir, remaining entirely intact with bold inks and clean perforations. H 4″, W 8.5″, D 0.05″. See photos. From the Allen Koenigsberg Collection
