Description

This exceptional turn-of-the-century quarter-sawn oak cylinder record cabinet is an incredible piece of early recorded sound history, proudly retaining its original celluloid label for the “Douglas Phonograph Company” at 89 Chambers Street, New York, a major retail, wholesale, and export hub of the era. From an expert collector’s viewpoint, the piece showcases stunning carved leaf-and-vine detailing along the top frieze, paneled sides, a plain reverse, and ornate brass drawer pulls with a matching top escutcheon. Slide open the drawers, and you find the magnificent original built-in cardboard peg tubes specifically manufactured to keep fragile 2-minute or 4-minute wax phonograph cylinders secure. Objectively, the physical condition is very good for its age, exhibiting typical minor surface scratches, shallow scuffs to the base and corners, and a rich, natural aged patina across the wood surfaces. Measurements are H 36.5″, W 20.75″, D 17″. Please see photos for condition. From the Allen Koenigsberg collection. Note: Pickup/Transport required. Contacts available Post-Auction.
