The Allen Koenigsberg Phonograph Collection
Lot 3246:
Description
A rare and seldom seen Phénix cylinder phonograph made in France circa 1902-03. it stands out in the history of recorded sound because it was built specifically to break away from standard formats and play its own dedicated wax cylinders. Phénix cylinders used an intermediate format that was slightly larger than a conventional standard Edison cylinder but slightly smaller than the competing French Pathé “Salon” or “Inter” formats. Today the records are just as rare as the machines themselves. This machine is basically a European copy of the Columbia Eagle with a few variances. It is mounted on a wood board with a wood cover that uses hook & eye style latches. The plating on the machine is fair to poor. Machine key winds and runs but needs a belt. The mandrel spins freely. The carriage moves back and forth freely and lowers the reproducer. The fine tune adjustment on the reproducer for proper pressure is an interesting feature. The reproducer is in good condition with stylus intact. The horn is a typical spun aluminum flare style measuring 10.5” long and 8” in diameter. Measures 12.5” wide, 9.75” deep, 8.25” tall with cover on. From the Allen Koenigsberg collection.
