The Allen Koenigsberg Phonograph Collection
Lot 3245:
Description
Lyre-base cylinder phonograph made by the prominent toy manufacturer Georges Carette & Co. based in Nuremberg, Germany. Marked G.C. & Co. on the bottom of the cast iron base. Founded in 1886 by French-born Georges Carette, the firm was celebrated for creating high-quality mechanical tin toys, steam engines, and early “talking machines”. They were cheap to produce and often given away as premiums for magazine subscriptions. This machine is all original. The spring winds and the motor runs. It needs a new string drive but the mandrel spins freely. Comes with a small morning glory horn with a good reproducer. The horn is missing the metal swivel stand that fits into the base post. Can be easily made. Measures 12” long, 6” wide, 4” tall without the horn. From the Allen Koenigsberg collection.
