The Frank Rider Collection - Spring Classic Part 1 - Day 2
Lot 1065a:
Description
The tokens within this collection feature a variety of inscriptions that identify the manufacturers, distributors, or specific establishments that commissioned them. The markings provide insight into the commercial and amusement trade networks of the early 20th century Markham Sales Co. (Battle Creek, Michigan): A prominent issuer in this collection, this company was involved in the distribution of coin-operated vending and amusement machines. Their tokens were frequently used to manage credit within their machines. Keeney’s (Keeney & Sons): Associated with the manufacturing and operation of amusement machines, such as pinball or arcade games, often found in retail environments. United Vending Machine Co. (Ohio): Indicates tokens used within vending systems operated by this regional supplier, specifically designed to handle product distribution or game credits. Generic Trade Markings: Many tokens lack a specific manufacturer’s name but provide clear instructions for their use, such as “Good for 5¢ in Trade,” “Good for 5¢ in Candy,” or “Good for 5¢ & Package of Mints.” “Loaned for Amusement Only”: A common legal disclaimer stamped on tokens to distinguish them from currency, ensuring the token had no cash value and could only be redeemed for play or goods within the establishment.
Serialized Tokens: Several tokens feature stamped numbers (e.g., 2311, 31560). These were likely used for accounting purposes, inventory management, or to prevent unauthorized duplication by patrons.
These tokens were typically minted in brass, chosen for its durability and resistance to wear in mechanical coin mechanisms. The physical state of these markings varies; some remain sharp and legible, while others show signs of blurring due to prolonged operation within coin chutes and sorting machines. H 0.1″, D 7.8″.
