WWII German 8.8cm Flak Shell Canisters
These are evocative pieces of military history: a pair of WWII-era German "Flak-Behälter" (anti-aircraft shell transport canisters) for the legendary 8.8 cm Flak 18/36/37 artillery piece. Constructed of fluted sheet metal, these cylindrical containers were designed to protect high-velocity rounds during transport. Notably, one canister retains its original Ordnance Tan (Dunkelgelb) finish with faint black stenciling reading "8,8 cm Flak, " while the other features the early-war Field Grey/Green finish. The tan example is stamped on the base with the manufacturer code "ajv, " identifying it as a product of Berg & Co. in Solingen-Ohligs. From a collector’s perspective, this pair represents the transition of German ordnance colors throughout the war, and both retain their rare internal wooden bumpers designed to cushion the shell. The field grey example features a fully functional cap and latch, while the lid on the desert tan example is completely detached and loose; both show heavy surface oxidation, rust pitting, and paint loss consistent with field use.
