Description
This is a magnificent example of a traditional Chinese processional dragon, likely mid-20th century, displaying the vibrant artistry required for festive celebrations. Measuring approximately 13 feet in length, it features a classic bamboo and wire frame construction overlaid with meticulously hand-painted fabric and accented with elaborate gold-tone fringe, mirrors, and “pom-pom” eyes to ward off evil spirits. The head is particularly striking, showcasing a fierce yet auspicious expression with multi-colored scales and textured details. The body is designed for fluid movement, supported by a series of internal hoops and decorated with a repeating pattern of bright rhythmic scales. This piece shows signs of age and authentic use in parades, including some fraying to the silk fringe, minor fading to the fabric pigments, and light surface dust, but it remains structurally sound and visually arresting for display or collection.
