Description

This is a quintessential piece of American Arts and Crafts furniture, very much in the manner of the Charles P. Limbert Furniture Co. of Grand Rapids and Holland, Michigan, circa 1905-1915. Limbert’s designs often featured the broad, comfortable forms and gently arched crest rails visible here, distinguishing them from the more starkly rectangular designs of Gustav Stickley. The chair is crafted from robust quarter-sawn oak, displaying the prominent medullary ray fleck cherished by collectors of the period, all highlighted by a deep, likely fumed, reddish-brown finish. It has wide, flat arms and a graceful curve to the back, indicating a high-quality maker. The seat is upholstered in a heavily distressed, dark leather, showing significant cracking and flaking, but beneath it, the underside reveals a typical Arts & Crafts woven cane or rush sub-seat structure, which is solid. Structurally, the rocker is sound. The wood frame shows surface wear, minor nicks, and consistent patina commensurate with its age. The upholstery is in poor condition and will require full restoration to preserve the piece for use, or leave as is in its original unmolested state. H 31″, W 23.5″, D 27″.
