Lot 218:
Description
This is a striking example of an American Arts and Crafts or Mission style dining chair, likely dating from the early 20th century, circa 1900-1920s. The chair is crafted from what appears to be Quarter Sawn Oak, which exhibits a beautiful ray-flake grain, characteristic of high-quality Mission furniture. The straight, simple lines, vertically-slatted back (four slats), and solid, slightly saddled seat are all hallmarks of the style popularized by companies like Stickley and Limbert. The finish is a deep, rich brown, consistent with fumed or stained oak of the period. Visible condition shows typical wear for its age, including minor surface scratches and indentations on the seat and legs, a consistent, aged patina, and visible signs of where the seat frame meets the rear stiles. The close-up of the crest rail attachment shows exposed wood plugs or dowel ends, common joinery of the era. Overall, a structurally sound piece with handsome grain. H 37.5″, W 15″, D 15″
