Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1454a:
Description
This is a magnificent example of contemporary Native American-inspired sculpture, beautifully executed in what appears to be Carved Alabaster or Soapstone and contrasting carved wood elements by Harrison Keith.. The piece is a striking bust depicting a Native American Chief wearing a dramatic feathered war bonnet, with the entire composition integrated into the form of a Buffalo (Bison) head. The main body of the sculpture, representing the buffalo’s heavy mane and the chief’s headdress, is carved from the lighter, striated stone, giving it a textured, hairy appearance. The details—the chief’s face, the buffalo’s muzzle and horns, and the traditional elements like the medicine wheel and feather carved into the side—are rendered in the darker, rich reddish-brown wood, creating an incredible visual contrast. The entire sculpture is mounted on a separate, fitted, light wood base. The condition of the piece appears excellent from the photographs, showing no obvious chips or cracks to the stone or wood. The wood base has some light surface scratches and a black mark on the underside, consistent with typical display wear. H 13.5″, W 9″, D 15″.
