Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1454:
Description
This is a magnificent pair of lithographs, “Buffalo Bull, Grazing” (No. 2) and “Buffalo Hunt, Chase” (No. 12), from the highly sought-after North American Indian Portfolio by the influential artist and explorer George Catlin (American, 1796-1872). Catlin’s Portfolio, first published in London in 1844, is a cornerstone of Western Americana, preserving the image of the Plains tribes and the bison before their near extinction. The style is classic mid-19th century lithography, capturing the drama of the prairie and its inhabitants. The lower left of “Buffalo Bull, Grazing” is clearly marked ‘Catlin del. on Stone by McGahey’ and the lower right is marked ‘Day and Haghe lith^rs. to the Queen,’ confirming their publication by Day and Haghe in London, which is the most desirable edition. They are beautifully presented within matching window mats that feature a double border, one cream and one deep green, and are mounted on a brown mat board, ready for framing. The visual condition of both prints appears excellent, with clear impressions and no major visible foxing or tears to the image area. The surrounding mat boards and presentation materials show minor handling wear consistent with their age, but the overall presentation is very strong. H 19″, W 23.5″. From the Native American display in Donley’s Wild West Town.
