Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1454b:
Description
Leonard Howard ’99 Sculptural Art This is a striking and substantial piece of contemporary Native American-themed soapstone (or similar soft stone) carving, signed and dated “Leonard Howard ’99”. The style is highly detailed and volumetric, featuring a central composition of an Eagle’s head, a woman’s face, and a man wearing a full feathered headdress, with a Bear carved on the reverse side. The sculpture successfully integrates powerful totemic imagery, with etched details of what appear to be traditional symbols like a buffalo skull and geometric patterns on the man’s headdress and a shield-like element next to the bear. The pale, pinkish-white stone exhibits natural veining and has been smoothly finished. The overall condition is excellent, with no apparent chips, cracks, or major scratches visible from the provided images, suggesting careful handling and display over the years. The piece presents as a beautiful example of late 20th-century Native American-inspired art. H 8.5″, W 16″, D 8″.
