Description

This is a classic deck of Congress Playing Cards, No. 606 with Gold Edges, produced by The U.S. Playing Card Co. in Cincinnati, U.S.A., formerly the Russell & Morgan Factories. The box design indicates this deck is likely from the early 20th century (c. 1900-1920s), an era prized by collectors for its beautiful chromolithographed box art and elegant card backs. The box art, a portrait of a woman is a charming example of the Art Nouveau/Victorian style popular for premium decks of the time. The cards themselves feature a sophisticated back design, a central portrait of the same woman, identified as “Ruth” on the card face. This particular deck is a single deck (indicated by the size of the box) with gold edges, a premium feature that speaks to its original quality. Included are the original two-piece cardboard tuck box and a full deck of cards. The overall condition is fair, showing its age and use. The box is worn with tattered edges, and faded. All identifying text is still legible. The cards show heavy signs of use, with rounded corners, considerable edge wear/chipping, and toning/soiling consistent with age and extensive play. Despite the wear, the integrity of this classic design remains. Please see photos for overall condition and markings. Box: H 3.75″, W 2.75″, D 0.87”. Cards: H 3.5”, W 2.5”.
