Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1424a:
Description
This is a phenomenal piece of haberdashery history! The lot includes a classic black top hat, likely beaver or silk plush, manufactured by Knox of New York, retailed by J. A. Hosch & Bros. in Milwaukee, Wis. Knox was renowned for their quality headwear, often associated with formal wear of the late 19th or early 20th century. The hat itself has a tall, cylindrical crown and a slightly curled brim, finished with a black grosgrain ribbon band. It comes complete with its original brown leather hat trunk/carrier, featuring brass hardware, a central latch, and a handle, lined with a handsome striped fabric. The lot also includes a pair of white cotton/kid leather gloves, appropriate for the formal attire the hat accompanied. Condition: The hat is moderately worn, showing some loss of nap/piling on the plush, minor surface residue, and a frayed tear in the hatband. The leather case is in a well-loved, heavily patinated condition, with significant scuffing, darkening, and cracking to the leather consistent with age and travel, including a blank brass nameplate. The interior lining shows discoloration and wear. The gloves appear lightly used but have some yellowing or minor soiling. Estimated Measurements: H 10″, W 12″, D 11″. (Note: The case is H 10″, W 12″, D 11″. The hat is slightly smaller.)
