Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1381:
Description
A late 19th to early 20th century, double-pan balance scale, intended for weighing bulk material, perhaps in a general store or mining camp setting. The scale features a cast iron pillar mounted on a rough-hewn wooden base. The top of the pillar has decorative centering indicator. One side features a deep, high-rimmed bowl for holding bulk material, which contains two small vintage railroad spikes (L 3” to 4”). The other side features a hanging pan with a small amount of pyrite. The main beam is marked “W.J.M” and “5 kg,” indicating its maximum capacity and potential origin from a region using the metric system, although it is a style common in the American West. The overall condition is rustic and well-used, consistent with its age and intended purpose, showing oxidation, a deep, uneven patina across all metal components, and wear on the wooden base. The scale is in working condition. H 22.75″, W 26.5″, D 11″.
