Description

Here is late 19th century (c. 1880s) Buffalo Robe Coat manufactured by the Leak Fur Manufacture Company out of Gloversville N.Y. This vintage full-length coat has a wide, turned-down collar. The coat is secured closed with six dark wood toggles. The interior is lined with a dark fabric featuring a distinctive zig-zag or chevron-quilted pattern. The interior of the sleeves features a sweater style cuff to eliminate cold breezes. A “LEAK FUR MFG. CO.” label is attached to the interior of the coat, near the collar, that references a strong guarantee about the quality of the skins and superior service/wear, suggesting a higher-end garment of its time. The overall condition is good, exhibiting signs of age and wear consistent with an item of this vintage. The interior lining shows notable wear and tearing near the collar and shoulder area. The fur itself maintains a rich color and full pile. Along with the coat is a period studio photograph, Cabinet Card, of a man wearing a buffalo coat. The photograph was taken by E.E. Seiter out of New Ulm, Minnesota. Coat: W 22″ from shoulder to shoulder. H 52″. Photograph: H 6.5”, W4.25”
