Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1377:
Description
This compelling photo collage captures scenes from “The Council Fire,” likely a 1920s-era pageant or theatrical performance in Thatcher Park NY based on the 1926 newspaper clipping affixed to the back. The images depict individuals, some in costumes evocative of Native American dress, participating in scenes like a woman looking out over a vista and a group gathering in a camp setting with tents. The collection of six black-and-white photographs is housed in a handsome wooden frame featuring carved or molded relief ornamentation depicting stylized vines and maple leaves from the Arts and Crafts or early Art Deco period, a popular aesthetic for framing vernacular photography of the era. The photocopy newspaper clipping on the back, dated 1926, provides critical provenance, detailing the event involving members like the Elks and possibly local Boy Scout troops who participated in the dramatization of an “Indian legend.” The photos themselves show natural fading and minor discoloration consistent with age. The frame exhibits moderate wear to the finish, including scratches and areas of loss along the edges, specifically damage to each corner region. The exposed wooden backing is held in place by numerous small nails and a section of adhesive tape and wire. H 14.5″, W 24.5″, D 1″
