Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1378:
Description
A stunning, large bronze sculpture, likely a recast or posthumous bronze of Frederic Remington’s famous work, The Wounded Bunkie. The piece captures a dramatic moment on the Western frontier, depicting two U.S. Cavalry troopers on horseback—one supporting his wounded comrade as they ride at a desperate gallop. The dynamic action and meticulous detail are hallmarks of Remington’s iconic Western art style. The inscription clearly reads “Frederic Remington,” suggesting it is a tribute or reproduction of his 1896 original. The material is a darkly patinated bronze, mounted on what looks to be a black or dark green stone base which enhances the drama of the piece. The saddle rigging on the horse carrying the wounded soldier distinctly displays the “US” marking, confirming the cavalry theme. This is a substantial piece of Western Americana art. The overall condition appears to be excellent, with a rich, uniform patina and no obvious chips or major scratches to the bronze figures themselves. The stone base is intact, and the sculpture is securely mounted. Base is 25” x 14”. Statue is 21” tall x 30” long. Note: Pickup/Transport required. Contacts available post auction.
