Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1302:
Description
This is an exceptional example of a double-door antique barrister or stackable bookcase, likely dating from the American Arts & Crafts era (c. 1900-1920). It exhibits classic Mission Style characteristics, notably the quarter-sawn oak construction with a rich, dark patina, which highlights the striking medullary ray figuring—a hallmark of quality in this period. The style is evident in the simple lines, pegged construction (visible on the base), and exposed joinery. The doors feature original leaded glass panes with a geometric grid pattern, strongly suggesting a high-end manufacturer like Globe-Wernicke or Lundstrom. Each side of the interior provides three adjustable/removable wooden shelves, offering excellent display flexibility. A close-up reveals hardware marked “SARGENT & CO. U.S.A.” on the brass strike plate for the cabinet lock, indicating a high-quality components maker, though the furniture manufacturer is not explicitly visible. It comes complete with its original skeleton key, which properly operates both door locks. The piece is in good to very good antique condition for its age; while there is evidence of a past refinishing, the finish is now very presentable and enhances the wood’s beauty. The wood shows expected minor surface wear and slight fading consistent with decades of use. Noteworthy wear includes a chip or veneer separation on the front-right top edge and general scuffing on the top surface. The glass appears intact but is dusty. Estimated measurements: H 58″, W 48″, D 14″. NOTE: Pickup/transport required. Contacts available post auction.
