Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1298:
Description
This is a beautiful example of a Mission style smoking cabinet, likely from the early 20th century, characterized by the dark-stained, quarter-sawn oak construction and simple, rectilinear design. The style is classic Arts and Crafts, emphasizing utility and visible construction. The cabinet features a hinged top section and a lower two-door cabinet with brass hardware, including a simple surface-mount latch on the side of the door and a keyhole. Notably, the interior of the lower section is configured with racks and holes for holding pipes and tobacco, which is specific to its function as a smoking stand. On the outside, there is a small rack with multiple drilled holes, presumably for holding pipe stems or tools. A colorful, somewhat worn circular decal is visible under the cabinet base, though partially obscured, it appears to feature a figure within a decorative border and possibly reads “MANF’D…SOCIETY”. The overall condition is good for its age, showing the expected signs of wear consistent with over a century of use, including surface scratches, some fading of the dark finish, and oxidation on the brass hardware. H 32.25″, W 15″, D 13.5″ NOTE: Pickup/transport required. Contacts available post auction.
