Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1260:
Description
This is an exceptional example of an Arts and Crafts movement bookcase by Charles P. Limbert, likely dating from the early 20th century, circa 1900-1915. The style is classic Mission Oak, displaying the brand’s characteristic robust construction, straight lines, and an emphasis on the natural beauty of the wood. It is constructed from quarter-sawn oak, which beautifully showcases the prominent "tiger stripe" ray fleck pattern in the grain. The bookcase features two glass-paned doors with original, period-appropriate antique brass hardware, including a small, round knob and a pivoting latch mechanism on the center rail. The presence of the clear "Limbert’s Arts and Crafts" branded mark on the back panel significantly enhances its provenance and collector value. The piece’s condition is consistent with its age and use; the deep, rich brown fumed oak finish shows general wear, including scratches, nicks, and some finish loss, particularly along the edges and feet. The four interior shelves are present, but shelf pegs are missing, and can be sourced easily. The glass is present and undamaged in the doors. The hardware is original and functional.
