Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1258:
Description
This is a superb example of an Arts and Crafts or Mission style library table, consistent with the work of Charles P. Limbert Company of Grand Rapids and Holland, Michigan. Limbert pieces are known for their slightly less severe, often more elegant lines than some of their contemporaries like Stickley, and the subtle, arcing transitions and rectilinear openings on the base supports align perfectly with the Limbert aesthetic, sometimes referred to as ‘Dutch Arts and Crafts.’ The table features a substantial oval top made of beautiful quarter-sawn oak, displaying the characteristic tiger-stripe grain. The base is constructed with four straight, square legs and is connected by a full, lower shelf, a classic feature for a library or parlor table. The sides of the base incorporate the iconic Mission style apron with through-cut, rectilinear openings, adding both structure and aesthetic appeal. The close-up images show the attractive grain and construction detail of these cut-outs. A faint, partial factory stamp is visible on the underside of the tabletop, confirming the Limbert manufacturer. The overall condition is good for its age, showing the expected patina and finish wear, particularly on the top which has visible water marks or white hazing in some areas. The structural integrity appears sound, though the base panels show some vertical separation along the grain lines, consistent with age and wood movement. H 29″, W 42″, D 30″
