Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1247:
Description
A superb example of a Mission Oak four-shelf bookcase, likely dating from the early 20th century, circa 1900-1915. The rich, dark fumed finish over quarter-sawn white oak is characteristic of the period’s finest manufacturers, such as Stickley Brothers or even a smaller, quality maker. The design is elegantly simple, featuring chamfered top edges, recessed back panels, and exposed tenon-like keys on the sides, which, while not true through-tenons, are a wonderful decorative nod to the hand-crafted ideals of the movement. The close-up of the wood grain, especially the flecks in the quarter-sawn oak, confirms the high-quality material used. Condition is quite good for its age; the original dark finish shows an expected patina, minor scratches, and wear consistent with over a century of use. The interior shelves and sides are largely clean, with only typical surface wear. A remnant of an old paper label, possibly an order or catalog number, is visible on the bottom surface, adding to its history. The solid construction appears sound, with a pair of channels likely cut for additional shelves cut into the interior sides of the piece. These could be filled and color matched to get the piece back to its original state. H 44″, W 21″, D 14.5″ Note: Pickup/Transport required. Contacts available post auction.
