Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1246:
Description
This is an exceptional example of American Arts and Crafts furniture, specifically an early console or hall table by the renowned Gustav Stickley (1858-1942). Identified by the recognizable red decal inside drawer, featuring the motto “Als Ik Kan” (meaning “to the best of my ability”) and the signature “Gustav Stickley” beneath a stylized joiner’s compass, this piece embodies the foundational principles of the Craftsman movement. The table is constructed of quarter-sawn white oak with a rich, dark finish, featuring clean, rectilinear lines, through-tenon construction on the legs, a low shelf for storage, a backsplash, and two drawers fitted with the distinctive wrought-iron “hammered drop” or “smiley face” pulls. The heavy, dark patina and honest craftsmanship place this piece firmly in the circa 1901-1904 era, when Stickley was consolidating his New York-based Craftsman Workshops. The table is in good antique condition, commensurate with age and use. There are minor scratches, scuffs, and areas of finish wear consistent with a piece over a century old, particularly on the lower shelf and drawer fronts, which add to its authentic character. The joinery appears tight and sound. H 39″, W 42″, D 18″ Note: Pickup/Transport required. Contacts available post auction.
