Description

This is a Mission oval basket circa 1920s with an unusual railroad train design motif. Often mistakenly attributed solely to the Mission period, they were actually created by various tribes and Southern California, including those around the San Clemente area. The term mission was applied by Anthropologist A.L. Kroebe in 1922 to describe baskets made by indigenous people under the Franciscan mission system (circa 1769 to 1834) however basket weaving persisted beyond the period with weavers adapting traditional styles and sometimes incorporating commissioned designs. The condition of this piece is very good with no visible loss of material. Dimensions: 15” long x 9.25” wide x 3.25” tall. Please see photos.
