Description
Coiled hand woven basket from Southern California, circa 1920. Often referred to as a “Mission” basket. This basket when viewed from the bottom coils clockwise, which means that it was likely Luiseno manufacture. The Luiseno or Payomkawichum peoples at the time of the first contacts with the Spanish in the 16th century, inhabited the coastal area of southern California, from the present-day southern part of Los Angeles County to the northern part of San Diego County, and inland about 30 miles. The basket displays a geometric pattern of 5 light and 5 dark rays emanating from the center, with a faint circle ring mid- way through the basket coils. There are approximately 25 coils from center to rim. The basket was displayed for many years, and has a slight lean to it. Dimensions: Diameter:19.75” and depth 3” to 4.25”.
