Description

Hand woven coiled bowl / basket made by either Yupik or Inuit people of Alaska, circa 1915. Tightly woven, this basket of bundled sea grass or ryegrass. Known as “Ivigak” it is durable and waterproof. It features geometric designs on the exterior walls of the piece. It is flat bottomed (6.5” diameter). There is an upper series of smaller geometric patterns between the 3rd and 6th coils from the rim of alternating 6 checkerboards and 6 inverted pyramids. Further on down the sides between the 8th and 14th coil are the same alternating checkerboards and inverted pyramids. Approximately 31 rows of coils in all. All of these designs are created by inserting a flat strips of leather (either sealskin, or caribou or walrus). Nearly all of these decorative elements are still present, with a few missing. There is some wear on the weft of the bowl, with loss at a section of the base, and most prevalent at the rim, where it would have been handled the most. Diameter: 11.25” and 4.5” height. A beautiful piece with character and nice pleasing color.
