Lot 1115:
Description
Coiled Yokuts gambling tray, circa 1910. Traditionally used by the Yokuts people (previously known as the Mariposas) of the San Joaquin Valley in Central California for playing dice games the tray is made of typical materials such as sage root deer grass and red bud. It features a geometric design that reflects the maker’s personal style. It served as a playing surface for a dice game where players would toss dice made from walnut shells or other materials. The design of this tray may have also played a role in the game, possibly making different scoring areas or adding to the game’s ritualistic aspect. Yokuts gambling trays are considered significant cultural artifacts and are often sought after by collectors and museums. Dimensions: 15” diameter, 2” depth.
