Description

This is an excellent example of mid-to-late 20th-century Native American Pueblo pottery, from Acoma, N.M., based on the marking on the base. The piece is a hand-coiled olla (jar) and showcases the distinctive fine-line geometric painting style characteristic of Acoma pottery. The lower half features a striking black-and-white geometric band, which contrasts beautifully with the creamy-white slip of the upper body. The upper register is adorned with three stylized black deer, each featuring a heartline (a line from the mouth to the heart, symbolizing life breath and spirit), and sprigs of red-berried flora. The terracotta-colored rim and base expose the natural clay, which is a key material indicator. The base is visibly hand-signed “Acoma, N.M.” and also bears the artist’s initials “K.S.C.” (likely the potter) and the number “-55″ (possibly a date or inv. #). This piece appears to be in overall good vintage condition with the same faint crack line near the rim noted previously; however, the markings on the base confirm the origin and potential artist, significantly enhancing the object’s provenance. H 5.25″, W 6″, D 6”. From the Native American display in Donley’s Wild West Town.
