Description

This is an excellent example of a full-groove stone axe, a classic lithic artifact from the Neolithic or Woodland periods, likely used for felling trees, woodworking, or as a heavy-duty tool. Crafted from a dense, fine-grained stone (possibly granite or diorite), this axe head features a well-defined, pecked full-groove running completely around the artifact, designed to securely haft a wooden handle. The poll (blunt end) is rounded, and the bit (blade end) appears moderately polished from use and time, though the grinding is not highly refined, suggesting an earlier or utilitarian style indicative of indigenous North American cultures. The condition is good, showing the expected patination and mineral deposits consistent with age and burial. There are numerous small pocks and minor chips, particularly around the bit and poll, which are typical signs of heavy ancient use, but no major cracks or breaks are visible. L 8.5″, W 4.25″, D 2″. From the Native American display in Donley’s Wild West Town.
