Lot 1077:
Description
Spontoon pipe tomahawk circa 1880s. The head itself is quite large and decorated. In the center of the blade is a heart-shaped cut out with evenly spaced depressions around the perimeter of it. There are suns or bursts on either side of the haft ring. The bowl is quite tall and has a series of three rings at the upper rim and its base. It looks like the original leather gasket is still present where the axe is hafted to the handle. The handle itself is as striking as the axe-head with what appears to be copper and silver or pewter diamonds inlaid on either side of the handle. Nearest to the mouthpiece, on one side is a wheel with 8 spokes. And on the other side it looks like a radiating sun. The mouthpiece for the pipe is brass. Good condition. Dimensions: 21.25” long. Axe head length: 12”. Blade height: 2.5”. Please see photos.
