Description
This beautiful Northern Plains pipe, carved from sacred red Catlinite revered by the plains and woodland tribes alike, features an effigy bowl depicting a horse head looking back at the pipe smoker. Its mane descends from the top down the side and underneath to the terminus of the pipe itself. There are 5 total holes for suspending decoration. The stem is made from one round piece of wood that has been decorated with domed metal tacks in a spiral design for 1/3 of the stem length. There are bands of pressed file decoration, and the wood was painted green, with much having been worn off from handling. Good condition. Dimensions: 19.51” long x 1.5” wide overall. Pipe effigy: 4” tall x 4.5” long. Stem15.75” long. See photos.
