Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1054:
Description
Primitive mortar and pestle set, expertly carved from a dark, coarse-grained volcanic rock. This type of heavy, speckled stone provides excellent abrasion, making it an essential tool for grinding grains, spices, or pigments. The bowl-shaped mortar features a wide rim and a rounded base, perfectly matched by the slightly conical pestle. Both pieces show age-appropriate wear and patina consistent with use. The condition appears very good, with only natural surface pitting. Measurements for the set are H 3.5″, W 5″, D 5″ (mortar diameter), with the pestle being approximately L 3.5″. From the Native American display in Donley’s Wild West Town.
